THOMAS FEULMER

Statement

I am interested in exploring the internal intimacy and alienation (as a survival skill? as a mode of intimacy?) that occurs through the terrain of my daily movements. I hope my work guides the viewer/participant toward greater degrees of intimacy and alienation (not necessarily a bad thing) through a physical experience grounded in the present.

My sculptural and action-based work often creates a scenario where the viewer's sense of intimacy or alienation is heightened.

In the past, my sound pieces have combined field recording, samples, and spoken segments, and are created for headphones. The headphones establish an audience of one - the lone individual as the audience and co-creator of the piece.

My drawings often use built-up layers of various media - polyurethane, nail polish, ink, etc. I think of the surface as a terrain for the eye. Occasionally, the drawings contain arctic whales - narwhals or belugas - that interact with each other. They depict situations where two creatures come together and become intimate.

Ways of thinking:

  • the terrain of social exchange
  • the landscape of an intimate moment
  • an audience of one
  • the course of a relationship with an object
