Statement

My current work addresses the idealization of and obsession with professional sports figures. The main subject is former Dallas Cowboy football player Deion "Prime Time" Sanders. Deion is considered the most flamboyant and best defensive backs in the history of the game. Playing the same position in competitive football, I was a fan and in fact one of my first artworks was a painted plaster relief portrait of Deion. Today I am drawn to his unique public persona created by a reality television show, music videos, legendary end zone dances and odd video clips from Internet. In a recent radio interview Deion spoke of his game day uniform attire, commenting about his jewelry, manicured nails and cologne. Is he the first metrosexual sports star? This intrigues me, a champion, making the presences of the feminine loud and clear in the machismo that is football.
